Why I don’t have Facebook

A lot of people ask me why I don’t have a Facebook account. Well, actually I do. But I don’t ever use it. This actually takes a lot of work, as everyone wants to friend everyone. And who wants to be poked?!

Basically, given my work with data over the years, I subscribe to the public-private divide. And Facebook as it stands in the analyst sense, is just too much private data that is way too public. A friend of mine wrote an article in the Age about over-sharing here!

I like also to keep private, well, private. And given the data work I have done over the years, I don’t even want confidential data anywhere near Facebook in it’s current form.

Facebook is a no-no for data, as you run the risk of connections trying to send you files that way. Not very prudent or careful. So for me Facebook best avoided. I take a wistful look over the shoulders of friends, family and colleagues who use the tool. Of course, I may change my mind in future.

I do, keep a very active LinkedIn profile and twitter feed.

If I know you, and we worked together, or studied at AGSM/Uni of Tas, I will accept your LinkedIn request!
